Merdaka Square
Merdaka square is one of the most significant sites in Kuala Lumpur - the site where the Union Jack was brought down in 1957 indicating the birth of the Malaysian nation. The square is the site of the annual national parade. A must visit for those going to Kuala Lumpur.
At one end of Merdaka Square is a giant flagpole - around 95 metres tall - symbolising where the flag was brought down to make Malaysia. Originally a cricket pitch the square is now a grass field surrounded by some of KL's key buildings.
